| Boswell Rockshelter 36So279
The Boswell Rockshelter is a stratified multicomponent
site located near the town of Boswell, Somerset County, Pa. Excavations
by members of the SCAS were conducted as a “chapter dig” during the 1999 and
2000 field seasons. Prehistoric remains suggest sporadic use
as a short term camp site from Late Archaic through Late Prehistoric periods
and possibly earlier. Continued study and analysis of this and surrounding
sites may help to better understand upland settlement patterns on the Somerset
Plateau.
The excavation phase of this project has
been completed. Work is continuing in regularly scheduled lab sessions
where artifacts from the site are being processed and analyzed.
