ARCHAEOLOGY is the study of man based on the material evidence left behind. Depending on the time period involved, this evidence may be lithic, pottery and other artifacts, or even written records.
THE SOCIETY FOR PENNSYLVANIA ARCHAEOLOGY, INC. (SPA) was established in 1929 through the efforts of individuals who recognized the importance of Pennsylvania’s archaeological heritage. The SPA’s stated goals include: the promotion of the scientific study of archaeological resources in Pennsylvania; the conservation of archaeological sites, artifacts, and information; the dissemination of archaeological knowledge; and the exchange of information between amateur and professional archaeologists.
ALLEGHENY CHAPTER NO. 1 OF THE SPA was founded in 1939 as the first chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, Inc. By establishing this chapter, area SPA members could more effectively communicate, coordinate activities, and present educational programs for members and for the interested public.
Any person with an interest in archaeology and/or history is welcome to become a member of Allegheny Chapter. Chapter membership categories and dues are listed below. Active membership entitles one to all chapter publications. Members are encouraged to be involved in SPA. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary.
Allegheny Chapter meets at 7:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month, February
through December. These meetings are held in Oakland at Carlow College
(3333 Fifth Avenue) in Kresge Theater, Grace Library, Upper Campus.
Free parking is available. A business meeting follows the program.
