Welcome to Allegheny Chapter No.1 of the S.P.A.!
The Society of Pennsylvania Archaeology (S.P.A.) was organized in 1929 to promote the study and preservation of archaeological resources in Pennsylvania. The Allegheny Chapter was the first chapter founded in western Pennsylvania and has enjoyed a long and productive history. The Allegheny Chapter offers many interesting activities to its members including monthly presentations, archaeological investigations, and field trip opportunities. Meetings are free and open to the public. No previous archaeological experience is needed. Annual membership in the Allegheny Chapter is only $10 per year. Allegheny County has some of western Pennsylvania’s most interesting archaeological attractions. The county is home to several prominent museums including the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Senator John Heinz History Center, and the Fort Pitt Museum. In addition, many professional archaeological digs have been conducted in Allegheny County including excavations at Fort Pitt, the McKees Rocks burial mound, the Blawnox Indian village site, and a prehistoric rockshelter located in North Park. Allegheny County is rich in archaeological sites, including many from the French and Indian War and early industrial revolution. If you are interested in
getting your hands dirty on a dig or just learning more about Pennsylvania’s
interesting past, please join us at a monthly meeting or call Jason Espino,
